How do cash loans work?

Updated November 7, 2026

Cash loans work in four steps: you ask for an amount, a lender reviews your request, you read and accept or decline any offer, and the money goes to your bank with repayment set on fixed dates. CashRunUSA is not a lender. We pass your request for $100 to $5,000 to lenders in our network, and each one decides.

What is a cash loan?

"Cash loan" is an everyday phrase, not a legal product. People use it for any small loan that puts money in their account quickly. In practice it usually means one of two things: a payday loan, repaid in one lump on your next payday, or a personal installment loan, repaid in equal payments over months.

The Consumer Financial Protection Bureau describes a payday loan as usually a short term, high cost loan, generally for $500 or less, typically due on your next payday. It describes an installment loan as one where the lender gives you all of the money at the beginning and you pay it back in set amounts over a specific period. We read both pages on November 7, 2026. The two feel the same on the day you get the money and very different on the day you repay.

What happens after I send a request?

On this site, your request is the baton and it moves through three stages.

  1. You pick an amount. Choose a figure from $100 to $5,000 and answer a short form.
  2. We hand it on. Your request goes to lenders in our network. We do not lend, set rates or make credit decisions.
  3. You decide. A lender may show you an offer. Read the rate, the fees, the total and the dates, then accept only if it suits your budget.

Lenders may check your credit and may ask to see income records. Not everyone gets an offer, and approval is never certain.

How much do cash loans cost?

Cost depends on the type of loan, the lender and your state. The Bureau's payday example is the clearest one we can point to: a finance charge can range from $10 to $30 per $100 borrowed, and $15 per $100 is common. On a $300 loan that means paying back $345 about two weeks later, which works out to almost 400 percent APR.

That is an example from a named source, not a quote. An offer you see through our network may be priced differently. Look at three numbers on any offer: the APR, the fees, and the total you will have repaid by the last date.

How is a cash loan repaid?

Most lenders collect automatically. The Bureau notes that for payday loans you generally give the lender a post dated check or permission to debit your account on the due date. Before you accept, check that the money will really be in the account on that day, because a failed debit can bring bank fees as well as lender fees.

What if I cannot pay on the due date?

Call the lender before the date, not after. The Bureau says to contact your lender right away and ask for an extended repayment plan. Whether you can get one depends on your state and the lender. A credit counselor or a legal aid attorney can also help.

Be careful with a rollover, where you pay only the fee and the due date moves. In the Bureau's example that costs $90 to borrow $300 for about a month, and you still owe the $300.

Should I try something else first?

If you have a few days, yes. The Bureau points to employers, nonprofits and community groups that may offer advances or emergency credit, and to banks and credit unions that may have cheaper options. Asking a landlord or a utility for more time costs nothing. If you still need to borrow, ask for the smallest figure that solves the problem.
